Atom Syndication Format is now an RFC standard
This is a great news for the Atom format, and people that have adopted this format as a standard in their applications. Its now a standard and you can retain this number RFC 4287 to refer to Atom everytime. The document as you may notice is pretty new, and date from December 2005.

This document specifies Atom, an XML-based Web content and metadata syndication format.
Atom is XML based and its usage growth very fast from a simple syndication standard similar to RSS to become a very complete standard useful for posting entries for example, images, ... Many blogging plateform support posting via Atom today for example, and the same for software. For example Nokia offer Lifeblog which is using Atom protocol to submit data from mobile phones to blogs supporting Atom standard.
As soon as the Atom Syndication Format is becoming a standard, the work in progress of the Atom Publishing Protocol is becoming much faster to make it also join the internet standard family. The current work is really interesting showing a simple format, in a simple description with just the basic features inspired from the different proposals that have been done for the format.
